The
highlight of summer in Mons on July 17-26, 2015.. get lost in a maze of 7500
sunflowers at the Grand Place. A monumental installation by French artist Fanny
Bouyagui, to honour the iconic painting of Van Gogh.
This
event follows a succesfull exhibition at BAM or the Fine Arts Museum months ago which explores the works of Van Gogh
during the two years he spent in the region of Mons.
Our
first attempt to go was on the Belgian National Day.
Since it’s a holiday, the line to get to this free event was so long (reaching
to the building of BAM around the back of the Hôtel
de Ville). Few days later on weekend (opened until
midnight), we tried our luck at dinner time and finally got in within
minutes.
We were given a wireless headphones with
instrumental music to accompany the tour. Then climbed the
10-meter tower for a panoramic view of the maze. There were also binoculars which
allowed us to see the details of the sunflowers.
On the last day, the sunflowers were distributed for free to the locals.
Even the days not as bright and warm as we expected
during the event, but it’s a beautiful moment having those cheerfully fresh
yellow sunflowers with buzzing bees in Mons this summer.
