La Porte du Taj Mahal

As the end of summer is fast approaching and short winter days are slowly coming, we’re back to grey Belgian sky. Windy and raining already on the first weekend of early September 2015.

We were looking for a nice place to have dinner which warm and comforting. Noticed this restaurant has been opened about a year but a bit hesitant to try it out. Since his Indian friend recommended a very good Indian restaurant just 8 km away and we really love to eat there, thought a trip to similar restaurant won’t be necessary. But today we’re thinking to make a comparison.

When the first time we stepped in to the place, felt like transported to India, the land of spices. The smell of aromatic incense filled the air with traditional music of India playing on the background. The place beautifully ornate with Indian décor and we fell in love instantly.

The good thing about this restaurant, it’s very spacious, so we can enjoy the ambience and dining experience. The menu which available in English offers wide variety of dishes, of course with vegetarian options, from appetizer to dessert. So many tempting selections of main dishes also rice and bread.

While waiting, we’re given free papadums (thin and crispy crackers) with condiments. A perfect combination of seasoned flatbread with fresh herbs and fruity dips for the starter. Then we shared a vegetable pakora (fritter). The ‘lump’ might looked the same but the spiced batter nicely covered the potato, mushroom, cauliflower etc.

For main dishes I simply chose lamb in Madras curry and he went for chicken makhni with tandoori roti. Everything cooked to perfection. The lamb wonderfully tender though I was hoping it could be more hot or spicy, while the cream in his makhni taste so rich. I would recommend this restaurant if you want to try Indian cuisine for the first time because the food taste very mild yet tasty.

Such a beautiful and romantic journey this evening, an Indian summer in Mons.

*Update: the place changed its name to Gurkha.
