Every Monday, in July and August 2019 at 8 pm there’s an open-air cinema
at the Grand Place.
So excited because it reminds me of childhood days at home. On Saturday
night if a family threw a party (wedding, for example), they would put a big
screen in an empty land. I remember the sound echoing til the early
hours. But sadly this tradition has long gone as land becoming more and more
scarce and the invasion of movie theatres.
On
the first week, the movie was “Pirates of the Caribbean” (FR).
I would say position of the screen was bad. Instead of putting it in the middle of Grand Place, it was only a few meters away right in
front of Copenhagen Taverne. Of course their tables were full. As I already
expected we’re all going to sit down, I brought a picnic blanket and snacks.
It took a while to sneak in between the crowd. Sitting wasn’t comfortable because
the uneven cobblestones.
At
home, Monday at the Cinema was brilliant marketing strategy to
encourage people to beat Monday blues offering 50% off movie ticket. But in Mons, if
you want to have dinner before the movie, many restaurants are closed on Monday.. and at 9.40 pm the garbage
truck drove past the Grand Place for the pick up schedule.
Before
the sky got dark and the screen was properly visible, people were leaving one
by one.
