IKEA Pop-Up Stores
The excitement before the official opening of IKEA Mons on February 10,
2016.
This is the first time IKEA creates pop-up stores before the opening of
one of its stores. The idea is to give the opportunity to discover the world's largest furniture retailer in a
different perspective. We won’t be able to buy anything here, it’s rather to taste,
discover and have fun.
*Until late January 2016

Nuit des Soldes
Nocturne/ the night opening of the
summer sale on July 4, 2015. Shops around the pedestrian
shopping street were mostly opened until 10 pm along with market of products
from the sunny Provence (France), Italy, Spain, Maghreb etc. A good reason to
stay outdoor because it’s too hot at home. Weather forecast for today: very
hot! (it was said around 36 degrees, even it’s not happening everyday in our
homeland in the tropics). This is probably the hottest summer during our stay
in Belgium.

| Selamat datang di Mons! (as in my native language) #surprise |
The old tourism office now housed a souvenir shop!
I’m so impressed with the collections of
merchandise and souvenirs they offer. One side it has collections of Van Gogh
theme products, from mugs to chocolate with his paintings. Limited edition
chocolate by Neuhaus. Also those things we could find at souvenir shops in
any touristic cities.
The long-sleeve tee cost me 12 EUR and pretty happy with it.
Nice fabrics and fits well.
So many things I want to buy. Maybe an umbrella.
A hoodie sweatshirt for Prince Charming. Of course to get “Mons 2015” items for
friends and family at home. Will be back for sure!
Grand Place 22
Open everyday, 10 am – 6 pm
Mons Où Venir
Finally.. a souvenir shop in Mons, located not far from Grand Place. It was opened in early 2012 at Rue des Clercs (near the Belfry) and has selections of typical objects like in most souvenir shops (t-shirt, keychain etc). Bought a nice t-shirt for my Dad because he wanted something that says Mons and in French. The quality of the products are better than most souvenir shops in popular tourist destinations (no tacky stuff!), but the price is slightly higher.

A small second-hand shop with unique finds and bric-à-brac.
*Unfortunately
now closed (last visited in 2012).
Librairie Scientia
Said
to be the best bookshop in Mons. It’s been in the center of Mons for decades.
Bought dictionary to cookbooks here. Of course most books are in French. I really recommend this place. The people do their best to help me find
the books. Heard we can also place our order via phone or fax.

Stocking Up Asian Goods
In case anyone wondering.
Somehow it becomes one of basic question for us: where do you go
shopping for Asian spices and ingredients?
Honestly, we just simply go to the nearest supermarket. Most of them
only have limited items, but we’re pretty happy anyway.
Delhaize
Guess it has the widest selection of Asian products. The store brand products
are good and affordable. The soy sauce, fried shallots, crackers and tofu are always
on our shopping list.
Carrefour
The first week I got here and
did grocery shopping was impressed when finding a box of instant fried rice. Didn’t
taste good. Most of products are imported, so it’s little bit expensive. Some
of them aren’t taste so good either. The only favorite product is store brand’s
rice.
Lidl
We don’t come here very often. Only shop when there’s a promotion for
specific product, for example: the Lunar
New Year feast, Indian or Japanese week.
